BackdoorWhere you make a hand other than the one you first aimed for, due to cards that came later. BetA wager. Big betIn limit, the size of the bet on the turn or river. Big blindThe secondary mandatory bet in Texas Holdem or Omaha. BlankA card which seems to help nobody. BlindBetting without seeing one's cards. BluffingMaking a bet or raise in a hope of winning the pot, not in expectation of having the superior hand. BoardThe cards showing which are in play. Brick wallA situation where you have little hope. Bring it inMake the first bet in a given round. Buck or ButtonA disc to represent the dealer. Action always takes place after the buck in flop games. Burnt cardThe top card left in the deck is discarded or burnt. This is to help prevent cheating. Buy-inThe amount of money a player starts with. CallTo match the amount of money the previous bettor has wagered. CheckTo take no betting action at this stage; often indicated by knocking on the table. Check and raiseTo check originally and then, when somebody else bets, to raise. ChipPlastic discs where each color represents a certain amount of money. ConnectorsTwo, three, or four cards in sequence. Crying callCalling where you think you are losing, but cannot resist the odds. DanglerA card in Omaha which bears no relationship to the other three. DealThe process of giving the players cards or laying cards in the center. DeckA set of 52 playing cards. Door cardIn pocker stars, a player's first card. DrawingWhen you are calling a bet in the hope of being dealt cards which will win you the pot. FavoriteA hand more likely to win than those opposing it. Fifth streetThe round of betting after the fifth card is dealt in pokerstrs, or occasionally, after the river card is dealt in Texas Holdem or Omaha. Fill upMake a full house. FlopThe three communal cards placed face up in the center of the table in Texas Holdem or Omaha. FlushFive cards of the same suit. Fourth StreetThe round of betting after the fourth card is dealt in Seven Stud, or occasionally, after the turn card is dealt in Texas Hold'em or Omaha. cardOne, because nobody else has bet, that comes. Full houseThree of a kind plus two of a kind. GamblingEither wagering, or wagering against the odds. Go to the tableGo all-in. HandThe cards a player holds, or the whole action in the pot from deal to showdown. Hole cardsThe cards a player holds which other players cannot see until the showdown. Implied oddsThe money you are likely to win by further betting, if you make your hand. KickerThe second card a player holds in addition to a pair made with one of the communal cards. Kill the actionTo bet or raise all-in, so that there can be no further play. LimitYou can only bet or raise a certain specified amount, which is usually much smaller than the pot. Limp inTo call a small bet. Live cardsCards not seen on the table in pockerstars. LooseCalling with a hand that is unlikely to win. Made handWhere you have a hand which may be winning. Marginal handOne where the hand may be either in front or behind. Matching cardsWhere two or more players have the same denomination cards. MoodyingTo misrepresent your hand by your talk. Morton's ForkWhere you are certain to have a hand which is either the best made hand or the best drawing one. No LimitWhere a player may bet or raise any amount when it is his turn. NutsThe best hand at that stage of the pot. OddsThe amount you can win divided by the amount you must wager. OmahaA pocker stars game where each player has four cards and there are five communal cards. OutsThe number of cards you can hit to give you the winning hand. Over cardsCards you can hit which may match your cards and possibly give you a better hand than your opponent. PassTo throw away one's hand. Poker SharkA player who only plays really strong hands. Playing the boardIn pockerstars just using the five communal cards for your hand. PositionWhere you are in the betting sequence among the players. This never changes in a particular hand in Texas Holdem or Omaha but may in Seven Stud. Pot LimitAt any stage you may only bet, or raise up to the size of the pot after you have called. Premium handOne that is likely to be winning. PotThe money or chips at stake in pokersars games. QuadsFour of a kind. RaiseTo wager more than the previous bettor. Reopen the bettingTo bet or raise so that other players can raise again. RiverThe last card dealt. RoundThe stage where each player still in the pot matches the amount of money each other player has wagered. Setting you inTo bet all an opponent's remaining money. Shopping the businessReveals the nature of one's hand. Short stackA player who has fewer chips than some others at the pocker stars table. Side potEverybody is in for the main pot. A side pot is between players who have more chips than somebody all-in. Small blindThe first mandatory bet in Texas Holdem or Omaha. It starts the action. Seven StudA pockerstars game where each player eventually has three down cards and four showing. SpreadTo provide a particular poker variation. StackThe chips you hold. StraightFive cards in a sequence. StudPocker stars game where each player has down cards and four cards showing. Texas HoldemA poker star game where each player has two cards and there are five communal cards. Ticket to the riverA hand you intend to play right to the end. TouristsPlayers who have mediocre hands. TournamentWhere everybody puts in the same amount of money at the start. Play proceeds until one player has all the chips. The money is then divided by a pre-announced system, depending on when players are knocked out. Trap checkingChecking with the intention of raising if somebody else bets. TripsThree cards of the same denomination. TurnThe fourth communal card dealt face up in Texas Holdem or Omaha. Under betTo bet less than the pot or the previous bet. UnderdogA hand which has only a poor chance of winning. Whip lashedTo be bet at first from the right-hand side and then from the left. WrapIn Omaha where you can make more than two straights. |
