Pockerstars

When playing at pockerstars there are many terms and phrases being used, many of which are listed below along with a brief explanation to help you understand these terms.

All-in

When a player bets all the money he has left on a single hand.

Ante

Where all the players put in the same sum of money, the ante, before the cards are dealt.

Backdoor

Where you make a hand other than the one you first aimed for, due to cards that came later.

Bet

A wager.

Big bet

In limit, the size of the bet on the turn or river.

Big blind

The secondary mandatory bet in Texas Holdem or Omaha.

Blank

A card which seems to help nobody.

Blind

Betting without seeing one's cards.

Bluffing

Making a bet or raise in a hope of winning the pot, not in expectation of having the superior hand.

Board

The cards showing which are in play.

Brick wall

A situation where you have little hope.

Bring it in

Make the first bet in a given round.

Buck or Button

A disc to represent the dealer. Action always takes place after the buck in flop games.

Burnt card

The top card left in the deck is discarded or burnt. This is to help prevent cheating.

Buy-in

The amount of money a player starts with.

Call

To match the amount of money the previous bettor has wagered.

Check

To take no betting action at this stage; often indicated by knocking on the table.

Check and raise

To check originally and then, when somebody else bets, to raise.

Chip

Plastic discs where each color represents a certain amount of money.

Connectors

Two, three, or four cards in sequence.

Crying call

Calling where you think you are losing, but cannot resist the odds.

Dangler

A card in Omaha which bears no relationship to the other three.

Deal

The process of giving the players cards or laying cards in the center.

Deck

A set of 52 playing cards.

Door card

In pocker stars, a player's first card.

Drawing

When you are calling a bet in the hope of being dealt cards which will win you the pot.

Favorite

A hand more likely to win than those opposing it.

Fifth street

The round of betting after the fifth card is dealt in pokerstrs, or occasionally, after the river card is dealt in Texas Holdem or Omaha.

Fill up

Make a full house.

Flop

The three communal cards placed face up in the center of the table in Texas Holdem or Omaha.

Flush

Five cards of the same suit.

Fourth Street

The round of betting after the fourth card is dealt in Seven Stud, or occasionally, after the turn card is dealt in Texas Hold'em or Omaha.

card

One, because nobody else has bet, that comes.

Full house

Three of a kind plus two of a kind.

Gambling

Either wagering, or wagering against the odds.

Go to the table

Go all-in.

Hand

The cards a player holds, or the whole action in the pot from deal to showdown.

Hole cards

The cards a player holds which other players cannot see until the showdown.

Implied odds

The money you are likely to win by further betting, if you make your hand.

Kicker

The second card a player holds in addition to a pair made with one of the communal cards.

Kill the action

To bet or raise all-in, so that there can be no further play.

Limit

You can only bet or raise a certain specified amount, which is usually much smaller than the pot.

Limp in

To call a small bet.

Live cards

Cards not seen on the table in pockerstars.

Loose

Calling with a hand that is unlikely to win.

Made hand

Where you have a hand which may be winning.

Marginal hand

One where the hand may be either in front or behind.

Matching cards

Where two or more players have the same denomination cards.

Moodying

To misrepresent your hand by your talk.

Morton's Fork

Where you are certain to have a hand which is either the best made hand or the best drawing one.

No Limit

Where a player may bet or raise any amount when it is his turn.

Nuts

The best hand at that stage of the pot.

Odds

The amount you can win divided by the amount you must wager.

Omaha

A pocker stars game where each player has four cards and there are five communal cards.

Outs

The number of cards you can hit to give you the winning hand.

Over cards

Cards you can hit which may match your cards and possibly give you a better hand than your opponent.

Pass

To throw away one's hand.

Poker Shark

A player who only plays really strong hands.

Playing the board

In pockerstars just using the five communal cards for your hand.

Position

Where you are in the betting sequence among the players. This never changes in a particular hand in Texas Holdem or Omaha but may in Seven Stud.

Pot Limit

At any stage you may only bet, or raise up to the size of the pot after you have called.

Premium hand

One that is likely to be winning.

Pot

The money or chips at stake in pokersars games.

Quads

Four of a kind.

Raise

To wager more than the previous bettor.

Reopen the betting

To bet or raise so that other players can raise again.

River

The last card dealt.

Round

The stage where each player still in the pot matches the amount of money each other player has wagered.

Setting you in

To bet all an opponent's remaining money.

Shopping the business

Reveals the nature of one's hand.

Short stack

A player who has fewer chips than some others at the pocker stars table.

Side pot

Everybody is in for the main pot. A side pot is between players who have more chips than somebody all-in.

Small blind

The first mandatory bet in Texas Holdem or Omaha. It starts the action.

Seven Stud

A pockerstars game where each player eventually has three down cards and four showing.

Spread

To provide a particular poker variation.

Stack

The chips you hold.

Straight

Five cards in a sequence.

Stud

Pocker stars game where each player has down cards and four cards showing.

Texas Holdem

A poker star game where each player has two cards and there are five communal cards.

Ticket to the river

A hand you intend to play right to the end.

Tourists

Players who have mediocre hands.

Tournament

Where everybody puts in the same amount of money at the start. Play proceeds until one player has all the chips. The money is then divided by a pre-announced system, depending on when players are knocked out.

Trap checking

Checking with the intention of raising if somebody else bets.

Trips

Three cards of the same denomination.

Turn

The fourth communal card dealt face up in Texas Holdem or Omaha.

Under bet

To bet less than the pot or the previous bet.

Underdog

A hand which has only a poor chance of winning.

Whip lashed

To be bet at first from the right-hand side and then from the left.

Wrap

In Omaha where you can make more than two straights.
